Obituary for Roy Paul Shields

Roy Paul Shields, who was described by his family as a man with the strength of a Live Oak, passed into heaven on Thursday, January 4, 2018.           A lover of crossword puzzles, fiercely devoted to his family, giving to a fault, a teller of stories (sometimes the same ones over and over again) and a purveyor of wisdom both simple and profound, Mr. Shields — or “Da” to his ever growing and expanding family — was 80.           Mr. Shields was the widower of Sarah Elizabeth Dycus Shields. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years Virginia Stephenson Shields, parents Stewart Abraham Shields and Altha Mae Shields, and brother Frank Shields.           Mr. Shields was a devoted employee of Chevron for 35 years and was proud of his job and his family and a member of Salem Baptist Church. He is survived by sisters Glenda Bandy and Jean White, sons Jeff Shields and Ken Hammontree and daughter Darlene (Hammontree) Parrott.           Mr. Shields grew up in the Cohutta area where his family ran a gristmill and lived his life displaying the traits of meekness, humility and intelligence while at the same time being a resource of that wisdom and a possessor of great strength for those he loved, which always continued to grow.           The family was multiplied by grandchildren Latisha Gordon, Amanda Whitfield, Amanda Braun, Ben Braun, Libby Shields, Katie Shields, Niclas Hammontree and Lucas Hammontree.          In addition to his children and grandchildren, Mr. Shields is survived by a son-in-law, Ray Parrott and daughters-in-law Jo Ellen Shields and Susanna Hammontree. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Mason Maddox, Kailey Maddox, Pearl Parrott, Gracie Dunn-Grover, Dustin Parrott, Matthew Whitfield, Chance Whitfield, Anna-Kate Gordon, Shawn Whitfield and Wade Whitfield and many nieces and nephews.          A service will be at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home Sunday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Darey Kittle officiating. Interment will be at Hopewell Baptist Church in Cohutta and there will be no graveside service. Pallbearers will be Ben Braun, Dave Gordon, Mason Maddox, Lucas Hammontree, Niclas Hammontree and Chris Whitfield. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.You may leave the family a message on the tribute wall, upload photos or light a memorial candle at julianpeeples.com.Arrangements are by Julian Peeples Funeral Home, Pleasant Grove Chapel, Dalton.
