Obituary for Nadine Davis

Nadine Davis, 84 of Dalton went home to Jesus on Friday January 11th surrounded by her family at Hamilton Medical Center. Nadine was born on August 17, 1934 in Cartersville, GA and graduated from Dawnville (GA) High School. She married the love of her life Jack Davis May 1, 1955 after he returned home from serving in the Army. They made the decision to stay in Dalton and start their family and had their daughter Jackie three years later.
Nadine was a devoted member of the Grove Level Baptist Church where she remained an active member until her passing. Nadine enjoyed going on trips with their Sunday School class, socials, and gatherings as long as she had Jack by her side. They walked together in Christ from the day they met until Nadine was called home. She always looked to God for guidance and knew that the journey he was taking her on was one that the Lord had chosen specifically for her. She not only kept her faith through her many struggles but led her family on that same Godly and righteous path. She was the epitome of the virtuous woman that Solomon describes in Proverbs.
Nadine had many roles in her life: Christian, wife, mom, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She excelled in all these roles and loved with her whole heart. You would always find her door open and she would be standing in the kitchen cooking or sitting in her den preparing for Sunday School. You would be welcomed with a glass of sweet tea or lemon supreme cake she had just prepared. Nadine always treated you as if you were her very best friend, which is what she considered you to be once you entered her home. She had a way with people and was always the life of the party with a funny story or her big smile to light up the room. As family and friends, you knew that there were scheduled events that she would not be missing. Aside from her time at church, you would find her lunching monthly with her birthday club or playing her card game with a group of her friends. On Fridays you could find her at the beauty shop with the same appointment time weekly. Christmas was her favorite time of year, from decorating her house to hosting her family, she loved the season and celebrating the birth of her savior. Nadine was the consummate hostess and was always preparing for a party with an expertise that impressed her granddaughters. You would often find one or both assisting her hoping to learn the skills and artistry that made her parties such events. She loved being a grandmother and especially a great-grandmother and made an impression on those girls that will never be forgotten. Nadine was never too busy or too ill for her girls and cherished every moment she got to spend with them. This was apparent even to the most casual of observers. She and Jack created an amazing legacy that her family will strive to carry on while attempting to emulate her grace and dignity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie Gray and William Claud Mathis of Dalton, her sister, Odell Mathis Jones and three brothers R.L. Mathis, Charles Mathis and Daymon Mathis, brother-in-law Jimmy Skates and her son-in-law Pete Gunn.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years Jack Davis of Dalton; loving daughter Jackie Davis Gunn of Dalton; adoring granddaughters and grandsons Sara and David E. Pennington IV of Dalton, Becca and Cory Allen of Sugar Hill. Her brother and sister-in-law Pat and Jimmy Mathis of Dalton, sister-in-law Mildred Mathis of Dalton, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Willena and Shelby Peeples of Dalton, sister-in-law Janice Skates of Dalton, brother-in-law Lloyd Davis of Dalton, special niece Lynda Fulton of Preston, Mississippi, cherished great-granddaughters Ella Gray and Georgia Garrison Pennington and countless nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday, January 14th from 5pm until 8pm at Julian Peeples Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel. The funeral service will be Tuesday, January 15th at 2pm at Grove Level Baptist Church with Dr. Charlie Bridges officiating. Burial will be at Whitfield Memorial Gardens with David E. Pennington IV, Cory Allen, Tom Peeples, Bryan Peeples, Alan Peeples and Eric Skates serving as pallbearers.
The family would like to thank the offices of Dr. Stephen Carson and Dr. William Whaley for the care and medical expertise that they provided for Nadine through all her battles. Also, special thanks to the staff of Hamilton Medical Center for their excellent care and compassion through these past few days.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Grove Level Baptist Church or Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, PO Box 1168 Dalton, GA 30722, designated for Peeples Cancer Institute.
