Obituary for John Patrick Byrne

John Patrick Byrne, age 90, of Oakridge, TN, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Pruitt Healthcare of Ft. Oglethorpe.He was born on March 28, 1927 in Brookings, SD and was preceded in death by his father, Charles David Byrne, mother Mildreth Nolan Byrne, sister, Nancy Nolan, daughter, Debbie White. Mr. Bryne served in WWII as a pilot for both the Army and the Navy. After the war ended he went to West Point for a short period then transferred to Stanford University where he earned a degree in engineering. He worked in the Aerospace industry for many years and participated in space capsule design during the late 1960’s and 70’s.His hobbies included flying and car restoration. An avid pilot for over 60 years and his Woodie restorations sold to collectors around the country. On 9-11-2001 he was one of the last pilots in the air after the Government shut down flights over the US and was told he was close to being shot down.Survivors include his wife, Joyce Byrne; daughters, Lynne Byrne Malasky of Bartlesville, OK, Molly Kam of Pflugerville, TX, Susan Rossee of Granbury, TX, Patricia Riley of Nashville, TN; sons, Mike Byrne and Mark Byrne of Dalton; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 2 nephews.A memorial service will be held at The Chapel of The Hill in Oakridge, TN on February 10, 2018 at 12:00 noon with Rev.
